from the atelier, week #47 (aka a week in review)

This week i finished my latest #wellnesswrap,
finished for a friend who is fighting breast cancer.
this has been my response to the news
of a friend battling cancer,
i crochet . . .

i start with a color and then the shawl grows
organically  . . .
i am never quite sure
where it will go.

this one surprised me with a button and a collar.

below is a link about the first #wellnesswrap and the thoughts behind this practice:

also this week i received this picture of a card that i designed for a friend
who lost her husband earlier this year.
she has been a long time fan of my dailydress inspirations
but we felt that a dress wouldn't be appropriate
so i learned how to make an origami star.
since she needed a good number of cards,
i got them printed.
i am so happy with the way the origami still has some of the 3D quality,
i'm consider creating
a set of quote and origami notecards . . .
any suggestions for which quotes to print?!?!?

'casted sun rise . . . .'
and to wrap up this w.i.r.
here are some of this
week's photos from my
 #fromthelandofdragons series
(especially for those of you not on FB and/or instagram . . . :)

where did the weekend go?!?!?

There are not enough days in the weekend.
Rod Schmidt
'flirt' the installation in its stairwell
Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and ice this weekend to join me at the opening receptions for these two exceptional exhibits.
Here are some pictures from the receptions and the prep.
I also have written a few words about each exhibit.  I hope to do so more but one never knows where the time goes.  I have been referencing this blog to gets some dates of dresses, etc. and numerous times I saw the notation that 'I will write more later' but it seems as if later doesn't happen?!?!?

Jean Ford Webb, Executive Director of Mother Brookand
'the daily dress series'
Natick, MA

I am so happy with both these shows!!

Flirt is a fabulous selection of art from 14 different artists
(myself being one).
This show is their inaugural exhibit, introducing
 Mother Brook to the community.
The building used to be an old school,
and fortunately instead of razing it, it was turned into an arts center.

It is a beautiful space, with the warmth of old world schools.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to create a piece for one of the stairwells, and voila 'flirt' the installation.
During the opening I observed many people posing
in front of the piece, which is fun.
Red Alert Cocktail Dress is also on exhibit there
and was the subject of many visitors' photos as well.

'the daily dress series' is another exhibit that I am truly excited about.  For this show I made photos of a selection
of my ephemeral dresses and  the gallery framed them beautifully.
It has been so exciting to see this dresses as a collection.
I also penned little stories that went with each dress.  Something that I have been wanting to do forever,
but it took the deadline of the opening for me to really sit down.
For this exhibit, Baldwin Hill
also asked to exhibit my creature and 'insatiable', and
I was astonished by how excited I was to exhibit my creatures,
and I was over the moon about working on 'insatiable' again !!

Last night during the reception I sat by my beast and crocheted away, while engaging in wonderful conversations!! #heaven!

So thank you Mother Brook Art and Baldwin Hill for offering the opportunity to create new works and revisit some old ones.

'insatiable' ~ out and about, again

Yesterday I delivered and installed 'insatiable'
at the Natick Public Library,

This exhibit features original pieces by over 40
it includes photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture,
mosaics, ceramic, glass, mixed media and more.

The curator and I perched 'insatiable' in the atrium stairwell
where she is stretching out her tendrils.
I am excited about how she is displayed;
hanging but not hanging,
up-close for library visitors but not too accessible
to little hands :).

I am super excited to have her out in the world again!!!
I hope to do a workshop sometime during the show
but I am not sure, as my fall is pretty full.
More about that is another post. :)

Creatures are out and about again

This Tuesday is the opening of Fashion and Fiberarts at the Dana Hall School gallery, Wellesley, MA.

I am honored to announce that I am part of this group show, in the prestigious company of Sara Campbell, Tia Pinney and Merill Comeau.

For this exhibit they are showing some work from both 'the dress project' ~ 'lilith' and 'emily' and my creatures. 'insatiable' is also making an appearance and I plan to spend some time with the Dana students feeding the beast.

Information about the opening and the show is below.

Always excited to exhibit my creatures as I leave it to the curator to decide how and where they will be hung/exhibited/placed.  Can't wait to see the show!!! Peace

so much to do, so little time . . .

where to begin . . .
Dress of Poetry on display at Attleboro Public Library
today I am heading to Attleboro to start the install of the Birds of Poetry!! I have two wonderful assistants with me and we are going to primp the birds, get them already for flight then, if TIME allows,  launch them into the atrium.

I also plan to stop by the Attleboro Arts Museum to see the exhibit On the Threshold – A National Juried Exhibition (July 14 – August 10, 2012).  I was hoping to make it to the opening last Wednesday but nasty thunderstorms and flash flooding put an end to that idea.  But will make there today to see the show.

While at the museum I will be picking up announcement for their next show, 8 Visions – Work from 8 Juried Member Artists in which I am also exhibiting!! I am really excited about this opportunity!! and, when I can, I am frantically working in my studio to finish some NEW pieces. Here is the info about that show :
Exhibition: August 21 – September 15, 2012
Opening Reception: Wednesday, Aug 22nd from 7 – 9pm. Free and open to the public.
Saturday, Sept 8th: Gallery Talk, 2-4pm.  Free and open to the public. Kindly reserve your space by Thursday, September 6th. 508-222-2644

Also last week I meet with the folks at JP Knit and Stitch and discussed performing 'insatiable' at their adorable shop during this years JP Open Studios!! Again, so excited!!! to sit in this inspiring place and crochet on 'insatiable' for hours ~ truly my idea of bliss.

So on Sept. 22 & 23 you will find me 461 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, MA, crocheting away!  I will also be selling my dresscards ( need to make that money thing :)  Here are some samples I made for JP Knit - with the paper for the dresses based on fiber arts and knitting.  I also borrowed some of their awesome fabric for some dresses!! So mark your calendars and stop by.

ALSO they want me to teach an organic crocheting workshop in the Fall ~
SO FUN!!!

Now off to Attleboro!!
