The dresstag story, first installment

The dresstag story
(a blog post that has been a long time coming)
a dresstag recently given to a friend on her way to NJ.
She put on the intention and left it somewhere in NJ :)
Many people have asked me about the whys and hows behind my dresstags, so I felt the best approach to the dresstag's story would be in an answer and question format.

There is a lot to the story of the dresstag, so I have broken it down into a few installments – with LOTS of visuals!!!!
let's begin . . .

 1. what is a dresstag???
A dresstag is a small origami dress, onto which I write a fortune, sentiment, intention or wish.  I then place them in random public places ~ such as on  a bus seat, in a payphone or at a Starbucks.
Then I walk away.

My hope is that someone will see this little dress and pick it up, read it and either replace it for someone else to find or take it home.  Dresstagging is a way for me to spread some good vibes and positive energy in this sometimes cynical world.

2. do you know what happens to your dresstags??
No, I don’t know what happens to the dresstag after I leave it.  Every so often I see that the dress is gone from the place I put it, but I have never seen a dresstag picked up.  In fact there is a bit of a sociological study in this dresstag practice – what causes people to pick something up or to just leave it???
may this dress bring u on a magical, mysterious journey
(the dresstag from the book reading)
Example: I was at a book reading at a  local library and I left a dresstag on the chairs of two girls who had gone up to get their book signed.  I did a quick pass by their chairs once the girls returned to their get their coats and then left and the dress was still there?!?!?

There is a lot of fear around unknown objects, ‘you don’t know where that has been’?!?!? 'Report any thing suspicious to the police' There is the fear of germs or of getting involved, even though my dresstags are small, colorful and basically benign.

3. would you like to know where the dresstags go??
YES!! but I don’t know how ~  I experimented with putting on my name or my website/email on the dresstags, but adding my information never fit the spirit of the project.  I would LOVE to know if someone finds the dress, however adding my email seemed to add a commercial element to my dresstags, which belied my original intention.
experimenting with tagging the dresstag . . .
i love instragram!
However, thanks to cell phones with cameras, many times I am able to photograph the dresstag in its public locale and post it on FB, Twitter and especially Instragram, along with the dress’s fortune.  These postings have surprisingly become a significant element to my dresstag practice.

Although I have no idea the fate of the physical dress, via these social media sites I learn that many of my dresstags have reached people.  I get ‘likes’ and even comments on different dress, some people saying that the photo brightened their day, which is my intent – be it in person or online.

I have dropped MANY dresstags in the past year and a half, and some of the photos of these dresstags I have collected in an album on FB.  Here is a link to this album that can be used by anyone!! no need to belong to Facebook and I quote'
"You can use this link to share this photo album with anyone, even if they don't have a Facebook account. Anyone with the link will be able to see your photo album." Facebook
(if you are not on FB and try this  link ,  please let me know if it works - I am so hot-wired into FB I am not sure I can really test the link:)

In this album you can see the many versions of my dresstags as well as the variety of places that they end up.

may this dress bring you peace . .
So this was a beginning of the story, more to come . . .

getting dresses out there

5x7 matted dress with quote
As alluded to before - I'm trying to get sale-able stuff out there so that I can support my large dress making habit, as well as help pay rent, buy groceries and such :) and with that in mind . . .

This week I dropped off some of my dresscards and dressmats at the store at the Attleboro Arts Museum. They have been carrying my dress project notecards but were excited to add the one-of-a-kind pieces to their inventory.

Also my 'uterus' is on exhibit at the museum in their "On the Threshold" show, juried by Michele L'Heureux (be sure to check out her website). Then following that show, I am one of the eight artists that the museum will be exhibiting in their "8 Visions exhibition" ~Work from 8 Juried Member Artists.
This show will run from August 21 – September 15, 2012.

I'm VERY excited about being part of this show and a bit freaked out about how quickly the delivery date is approaching.  I was planning to have an entire new body of work to exhibit (in another reality) but I am happy with the new pieces that I will have.   I will be exhibiting with seven other wonderful artists: Patricia Berube, Brenda Cirioni, Susan Denniston, Sand T Kalloch, Niva Shrestha,  Mary L. Taylor & Felicia Touhey (this is the first year that the exhibiting group is all women :).

I have also been experimenting with some produced products, items that I am not making all myself. I have designed some products where an image of the 3D origami dress will be printed on a 2D product?!?  I have put in a sample order so we will see how & if this all works out?!?!?!
Peace is always . . bumper sticker

It is all a work in process!!
And with that said I need to go to work in my studio :) - no more productive procrastination for this artist!

Wishing all a peaceful and joyous Summer Sunday!!

dresscards

As I mentioned in my last post, I introduced my dresscards during my open studios and now I will officially introduce them here. My dresscards are my newest note cards, each with a hand~picked quote and a hand~folded origami dress ~ which is attached with a brad.

With these note cards I am happy to be incorporating two of my loves ~ my origami dresses and words & quotes.  I am constantly searching for the quotes that move me.

I hope to highlight the wise words of women (like my heroines ~ Anais Nin, Mary Oliver & so many others)  but i will mix it up (not being a big fan of any kind of discrimination :)

The cards are white and 4x6; blank inside and signed on the back.
They can be sent or framed or both.

At this point you can get them at Artisans Way, 18 Walden Street, Concord, MA ~ 978-369-4400
and in a new store in Natick, Renew!, 19 South Main St. ~

or you can order via me just email me or comment below.
The cards are $8. ea. ~ you can request a quote but the dress paper will vary.

So that is the story of my dresscards!!! I have also been trying to post a new quote each weekday on Twitter (@virginiafitzart) and on facebook!! so you can see new cards there!!

 Happy Halloween & Peace!!

an appeal for creative suggestions..

fortune dress on card

Here on the home front ~ i am doing a few more 'dress droppings'.  I love the whole concept of randomly scattering these dresses filled with good intentions, yet i have been wrestling with some aspects of this activity. Hoping that my cyber-community may have an idea or two!!

First - i don't like calling them dress bombs, although 'bombing' is a graffiti term and scattering these dresses around has a 'graffiti' element.

to bomb :To bomb or hit is to paint many surfaces in an area. Bombers often choose throw-ups or tags over complex pieces, as they can be executed more quickly. From Wikipedia's graffiti terminology

I don't like using verbiage that refers to violent or military action.  I believe in the idea that all we do/say/think sends certain energies into our world ~ positive, negative, kind or aggressive energies; thoughts become reality.  This idea about violence in our language was very much in the press after Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot. Articles were written about how our language is full of combative and brutal imagery.  Here is a link to an NPR article speaking to this issue.  So I am trying to find a more positive name/label ~ dress droppings ?!?, dress-ups ?!?, dress tags (another graffiti reference) Any thoughts?? I'm open to all ideas and would love any suggestions!

Also I experimented with putting the dress on a card with additional information.  It is about the size of a business card, and I listed my blog address, so I might get a record of where these dresses end up.  Although part of this process is the randomness of just putting the dresses out there, it would be fun to see where some end up.   But not sure I like the dresses attached to anything. Again any thoughts???

on a card or just free flying out there in the big wide world?!?!?

Fortune dress w/out card in Home Depot

And lastly I am experimenting with putting these dresses on greeting cards ~
hope to have a bunch done for Natick Artists' Open Studios ~                                                                                             October 15 & 16, 2011 ~ noon - 5 pm

So thanks for any idea & peace to all!!

dresses 'hit' metrowest .... such fun!!

More dresses 'bomb's, this time in some Massachusetts towns ~
Wellesley, Needham & Natick....

This dress was left in a sugar bowl at the Treats Cupcakes Bar in Needham
before dinner
& was gone after dinner!!!
what fun!!!!

& I had a different cohort this time :), thanks Harriet!!!

Not sure if I will be able to keep this up during regular work week hours ....  but it has been fun for the 3 day weekend!!!  I love the idea of spreading good intentions and maybe inspiring someone.  Though I have NO idea where these dresses are ending up ~ that is kind of fun too!!!
Peace

Dress 'bombing' in Portsmouth, NH

Today, daughter Maya and I took to the road to one of our favorite New England hamlets ~ Portsmouth, NH.  While there I got the idea of sprinkling the town with 'good fortune' dresses.

It started while waiting at Starbuck's.  Not being one to have idle hands - I made a dress out of an index card that i had in my pocket.  After I made it I thought it would be fun to put it in a corner with a bit of good fortune on it for the one who may find it.

dress#1 ~ "may this dress bring u joy!
starbuck's, 1 Market Squ.

Maya and I liked the idea so much that we found some beautiful origami papers and made a few more, which we carefully placed around downtown Portsmouth.

dress#2 ~ "for you who finds this dress, may you have a yummy meal!
me & ollie's, 10 Pleasant St.

dress#3 ~ "may this dress bring the finder personal satisfaction"
a planter on Congress St.

dress #4 ~ "may this dress bring u a good night's sleep"
random car on Congress St.

dress #5 " may this dress bring you love"
Riverrun Bookstore, 20 Congress St.

dress #6 ~ "to the finder of this dress ~ find good fortune"
shoe store on Market St.

who knows if anyone may find one of these dresses, or for that matter pick it up! But it was fun to quietly dapple downtown Portsmouth with some good thoughts.  But now, watch out, because who knows where dress will pop up next???

Happy Labor Day Weekend to all!! Peace
