'The day it snowed and snowed and snowed ...'

I usually post this story on my dad's birthday,
(but as things go this time of the year ...)
So without further delay,
 Happy Birthday Bob Fitzgerald
and here is your story,
(with a few edits in text and in the illustration from last year :)
Enjoy!!

'The day it snowed and snowed and snowed ...'
by Virginia Fitzgerald
dedicated to my Dad,
Robert Fitzgerald

My brother and I woke to a sky full of snow, and the feel of magic in the air.
Mom was worried about a big storm, but all my brother and I saw was a day full of merriment and fun.
After breakfast, we played in the courtyard, bundled in our snowsuits, hats, and mittens.
During lunch, Mr. Schuller, the super, came by to make sure the heaters were working and warned us that this storm was turning out to be a big one!
Mom watched the TV, as my brother and I watch the snow.
Daddy came home early from work. He brought some groceries and some friends who were going to stay with us since they were stranded in the city.
Suddenly our apartment was full of adults, neighbors and friends, music and laughter. We were having a snowbound party.
As our apartment got louder and louder, the city got quieter and quieter. The snow kept falling, blanketing the streets; no cars were moving, all was as quiet as a graveyard.
My brother and I gazed out through the steamed-up window watching the storm subside. Daddy joined us to admire the white wonderland, and then asked if we wanted to go sledding?!
We explode with excitement!!! Yes!!!Yes!!!Yes!!!
Mom didn't like the idea at all! She thought it was too cold, too late, too dark.  But Daddy convinced her, as long as my brother and I promised to go straight to bed when we got back.
We promised!!!
And so the bundling began again, this time with extra shirts and pants and scarfs and socks.  And when we felt as if we couldn't  even move, Daddy grabbed the sled and we tottered off.
The street was so quiet and white, it felt as though we were tiny mice in a giant's castle. All around us were large looming mounds of white, the sleeping giants, casting off dark engulfing shadows, made from the bright moon beams from the towering street lamps.
As we gazed around in wonder I noticed the sidewalk had vanished under these hulking mounds. They were impassable. I thought this would end our adventure right then and there, but my dad didn't waver.
He trudged through the snow and into the street, where it was not so deep. My brother and I had been told to never play in the street, so we hesitated.
But Daddy waved us on, explaining that tonight was a special night, with special rules. There were no cars out tonight, in fact, nothing at all was moving so we could be in the street.
My brother and I looked around, he was right!
So my brother and I clamored on the sled, my brother nestled in my lap, and we were off, down the middle of Dearborn St. Warm yellow lights streamed out of every window, adorning everything with an enchanted glow.
As I held on tight to my brother and felt the cold air on my cheeks, I heard the sleigh blades skate along the snow, my brother's quick breaths and my father's boots crushing the freshly fallen snow.
This was pure magic; to be out so late under the deep blue night sky, to be with my dad who left his friends to be with us, and to be surrounded by such snowy quiet, in the middle of the city, with my brother safe and snug in my lap.
Later, we clambered back up the stairs, to our apartment, with our cheeks kissed pink with the brisk winter air. And after we pealed off all of our wet coats and boots and mittens and scarves, my brother and I said our sleepy goodnights to the party. Then we stumbled in to our toasty, cozy beds. And as my cheeks and toes began to thaw, snuggled deep under my warm blankets, and I held tight to the magical feeling I had from the day it snowed and snowed and snowed.

Perks of summer ...

One of my favorite perks of summer is getting to visit Poetry Hill Poetry's Summer Writing Program and leading these lovely kids in an art project.  These visits are particularly enjoyable as these kids are wonderfully creative and take my art activities and create pieces beyond my imagination.  I am always awed by their ideas and finished pieces.
picture created using thumb and fingerprints
(and pen) note how the flowers
feel like they are flying!

This past week we created graphic novel pages/comics using thumbprint art.  Thumbprint art is basically using an ink pad and either your thumb or fingers to make a print which you can then make into ANYTHING by adding lines.  You can also use your prints in a group to create larger shapes and images.  You can see by the finished pieces below that these kids did both.
I started the session by demonstrating some possibilities and then handing out ink pads and scratch paper to let them play and get a feel for the process.  While they were experimenting I asked them to think about a story for one of their thumbprint characters.  After a bit, I handed out a page with empty 'storyboard's and ask them to create a story using thumbprint art.  The stellar finished pieces are below, many with lovely narratives.  And just in case you too want to play, here is the link to the printable template.
True confession: thumbprint art is HIGHLY addictive, as you will see by the piece I made for my 'dailydress' blog

they are accepted.
Lastly, Potato Hill Poetry's Summer Writing Program has one more inspiring week left and if you are local and have a budding creative in your house, I highly recommend that you click here and check it out!! http://www.potatohill.com/summer-writing-program/

as the kids were diligently working away I continued playing on the board,

TOTALLY ADDICTING!!
And in response to a conversation about 'weirdness' that we had as we worked on our pieces, I created the illustration below, using my thumb and fingerprints.

SOS ... any suggestions for my #100DayProject?!??

It is that time of year again!?!? The100DayProject starts its 5th year tomorrow, and even though I am still in the throes of moving I must participate.

And I use the word 'must' for a few reasons. One is that I love participating in creative community challenges. Two, this is a perfect catalyst for me to unpack and find my paints and studio after this chaotic move. And lastly I choose 'must' because this desire comes from deep inside me which is how Elle Luna describes one's passions in her inspiring book:

I first read "the crossroads of should and must ...' in August 2016, after stumbling upon it and I devoured it and it has changed my creative life, or at least gave me a new perspective.

My 'must' to do this year's 100 day project is so strong that I have numerous lists of possible projects that I'd LOVE to devote the next 100 days doing, such as:

100 days of ...

  • art blogging - posting here on my art blog, as I really want to get back in the habit of chronicling my creative journey.
  • SCRAPs: Seriously Creative Recycled Art Projects* this is my trademarked name I made for my bottle cap jewelry (decades ago) and I was thinking I would resurrect the name for 100 days of collage and working with scraps.  One thing this move showed me was that I LOVE scraps, scraps of paper, of fabric, of labels, of yarn.  This would be similar to my dailydress journal(see below), however or the 100 days of SCRAPs I wouldn't necessarily add a dress?!?!
  • dailydresses - it almost feels too obvious, but I would love to create 100 days straight of dresses; ephemeral dresses, embroidered dresses, food dresses, sculptural dresses, painted dresses, collages?!? .... you get the idea.
  • visual gratitude - you know how gratitude is the best attitude?! I thought I'd create an image of something I was grateful for each day
'from the land of dragons ...'
  • food puns -  I have been considering rendering food quotes/puns, such as 'Olive you' with hand-lettering or using my understanding of the non-traditional material to create some interesting looking phrases.
      • 'from the land of dragons ...' since Scruffy past I haven't been walking as much so not wondering through my land of dragons ...
  • Virginia's kitchen knowledge - illustrations of helpful food facts, food prep and storage tips, recipes and whatnot.
  • my morning coffee - some kind of rendering of my morning cup of coffee
  • 'Karoline Kitty who lives in the city' 100 drawings of the life and times of Karoline Kitty
  • Portraiture: I've learned from agent and teacher Lilla Rogers that a strong illustration portfolio shows that an illustrator can do faces!!

OMG - the more I write this blog the more ideas I have ....
So I'm not sure how I am going to decide but I need to decide by tomorrow! if you have any thoughts I would LOVE to hear them as I am feeling pulled in many directions!! But one thing I know is that it can not take up too much time!! This project's goal is to be creative on a daily basis. And as much I as would LOVe to do all of this project and spend all day in my studio, I need to unpack!

thank you & peace,

International Women's Day and hand-lettering

week 7 HOMwork

As I love to join in creative challenges I have jumped onto HomSweetHom's  wagon of weekly #HOMwork challenge, where each week we get an assignment to play with.
Now I signed up before I knew that I had to move in about a month, so I told myself that I would join in on the challenges once the dust had settled from my move ... HA!

Well a few weeks ago, week 7,  our assignment was:
Your assignment this week is to determine who your biggest hero is and why, then letter their name along with some of the reasons you look up to them.

This person could be someone who has made you feel like you can go after your dreams and achieve them, someone who has encouraged you along the way, or someone who has been an example to you of who and what you want to be. This person could be a mentor, a teacher, a friend, a family member, someone from a different era, or someone you've never even met.
the minute I read the assignment I knew who I would celebrate, but I put it aside because I was moving! I had also side-lined my annual postings for National Women's History Month because of moving! But when we here in Boston got a snow day yesterday and it was International Women's Day and I really do not!! like this whole moving thing, I decided I would treat myself by doing my week 7 assignment ... hand-letter my two heroes and just some of the reasons that these two women rock my world.

So in honor of International Women's Day, I wish to say thank you to my heroes, my two incredible daughters, Maya and Harriet.  You two amaze me daily. love, mom

peace & thank you,

Just under the wire ... #makeitindesign

quote by oscar wilde
Since reentering the world of surface design and freelance illustration ( I was freelancing few decades ago, pre-internet ) I am amazed by all the wonderful resources that are available!! besides being able to view so many illustrators works on Instagram and Pinerest, there are so many educational websites and online classes.  Many a morning I can fall into the blackhole of the cyber-world just following interesting links that are delivered to my inbox.  And that is exactly what happened today ...

Today I learned it was the last day to enter an online competition run by MakeItInDesign.com and to enter one needed to turn a positive mantra or uplifting quote you live by into a beautiful typographic design!!!! and the winner would receive:
a place on The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design
posted on 'with love, virginia'

The Ultimate Portfolio Builder‘ course starting March 21, 2016.
So let's review ~ possibility to be in a class about building my illustration/surface design portfolio and creating an interesting illustration using typography and an inspiring quote?!?!? I'm in!!!
So I would just squeeze one more thing on my already full 'to-do' list today.  And I figured I would work-up one of the quotes that I had done for my inspirational blog, with love, virginia, it won't take that long ... ha, ha, ha.

Also as I was ping-ponging between all my different 'to-do's I suddenly was curious exactly when the 'creation' needed to be posted, since with many a deadline I have learned that I can really focus and finish once the other part of my day is done, the girls are feed and taken care of, the dog walk, the evening hours ... But I am SO glad that I did check because the deadline was midnight, but midnight  (GMT) (that is 7 PM EST!!!!! ACK!!!!)

But all is well as I pressed share seconds before 7 PM (EST) (fingers crossed) and I am happy with the resulting illustration.  In fact I hope/plan to do some more work on it as I think it would be great for a book bag?!? Which is another reason I love to enter competition and join challenges, as it is a great way to push yourself to make work!! So here is my entry, an illustration of one of my favorite Oscar Wilde quotes.

MIID_COMPETITION_550PX_LR

patterns on a post-it

photo by Francisca Nunes of some of our posts for her #30daysofpatternstudies
One of the perks of Instagram, besides finding awesome artists and beautiful art, is discovering interesting projects/challenges.

Last year I contributed to the coloring book 'Breathing to a new Beat, "the Breathing to a New Beat Technicolour Dream Book is a collaborative fundraising colouring book to support the Heart and Lung Transplant Trust Vic (HLTTV)" and the brain child of CurlyPops .

This month I stumbled upon Francisca Nunes' #30daysofpatternstudies and knew it was perfect for me ... I love pattern and a post-it is the perfect size so that I can't spend all day working on it (need to be on the watch for anything that may be a #productiveprocastination possibility)

pattern 11/30

And it has been a perfect project, post-it are always available, and perfect for when you are on 'hold' on the phone, waiting for a carpool pick-up and lately they have been quite handy while traveling on the train and during the 'lovely, yet repetitive' college informational sessions.  This week Francisca posted about her reasons for starting her #30daysofpatternstudies and has posted some of our patterns (make sure to click on the link at the bottom of this post to be taken to her blog!)  and I figured I would share how this has been such a terrific experience for me on my blog.

pattern 10/30 'lovebirds' for Valentine's Day
First I have really enjoyed getting to 'know' Francisca and her work via Instagram

another photo by Francisca Nunes of some of our posts for her #30daysofpatternstudies

Secondly, any of these daily or monthly projects/challenges are a great way to hone a certain interest or talent. Doing a certain assignment every day for an allotted time takes away the sense of the work being 'precious' or the need for it to be 'perfect', two words that can kill any creativity!!

one of the rooms at Charleston, Sussex, England

Creating these 3x3 pieces of pattern has reminded me about how much I LOVE to create pattern, how I used to envision living in a home that I covered with pattern.  This explains my obsession with the Bloomsbury Group and the country home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, the Charleston Farmhouse, where the artists decorated the walls, doors and furniture!

pattern 13/30
pattern 14/30
Also this project got me to pull out my gouache paints, an opaque watercolor, which I used to use when I was creating illustrations and art for greeting cards (way back when).  Via these post-it, I am thoroughly enjoying rediscovering the wonders of gouache, which is so timely as I am reestablishing my freelance illustration and design business this year!!
pattern 12/30 (pen and gouache)
Lastly this has been an awesome project to take on the road ... post-its are perfect for traveling as I taking my daughter on an eastern seaboard college visit via Amtrak.  And it turned out to be a lovely mother/daughter bonding moment!!! Below is my post-it pattern which was inspired by Maya's beautiful mandala!!!
pattern 15/30

To see all of my post-it patterns you can check out my instagram feed and to see see the work of Francisca Nunes and read her thoughts about her project, #30daysofpatternstudies check out her blog:
And lastly, as Francisca noted in her blog, JOIN the FUN!!!
"If you join us post your patterns with the #30daysofpatternstudies and #heartmakespostit, so every patterns will be in the same palace and we all can see the creations of each others!"

hope to post this on spoon flower as a repeat
